Type the title in romaji, in English or as the shorthand everyone uses, and the page opens: every season by the cour, every episode with the day it aired in Japan, the voice cast, and a Watch now button set to your country, subbed or dubbed. One Piece to this season's simulcasts, the Ghibli films to the Chainsaw Man movie, and My List keeps your place.

All topicsThe 9anime app for Android, iPhone, iPad and TV
The 9anime app installs from the site in two taps on Android, iPhone and iPad and runs full-screen with its own icon, your list, your country and your episode marks. On a television it works in the browser and casts from your phone.
9anime to, org, me, se, gate and the address to keep
The 9anime name has lived on to, org, me, se, gate and gg, and spent a year as AniWave. This is the address to keep; here is what each of the others was, and how to tell the real site from a copy.
9anime down or not working? What to check
"Is 9anime down" comes up constantly. When the site will not load, search returns nothing or Watch now shows no services, one of five things is usually happening. Each takes a minute to fix.
Sites like 9anime: alternatives, GoGoAnime and what to compare
"9anime alternatives" is the second most searched phrase next to the name, and GoGoAnime the site most compared with it. This is the site itself; here is what to compare if you want a second one.
Subbed, dubbed and subtitle problems on 9anime
Every anime on 9anime is listed once, in Japanese, and the sub and dub tracks live in the service you open with Watch now. How to find the English dub, the Hindi dub or the original with subtitles, and what to do when subtitles will not show.
What happened to 9anime: the AniWave years and the address to keep
9anime launched in 2016, renamed itself AniWave in 2023, and closed in August 2024. What happened, why people still search the old name, and where the site is now.
9anime: watch anime online, subbed and dubbed, with every episode where you left it
9anime is the site you open when you know the anime you want and you want the episode, not a search results page. Type the title in romaji, in English or as the shorthand everyone uses, and you are on its page in a second: the story, the year, the voice cast, every season counted by the cour with every episode dated the day it aired in Japan, and a Watch now button already set to your country, subbed or dubbed as the service offers. One Piece runs past a thousand dated episodes here; Solo Leveling, Frieren and Jujutsu Kaisen sit in the spotlight; the Ghibli films and the Chinese donghua have shelves of their own.
Browse instead and the front page is the one people remember: the purple spotlight band, Recently updated with its tabs, Recently aired day by day and Anime movies down the left, and down the right the Quick filter, the Top anime list with its Trending, Top rated and Long runs tabs, and Recently Added; the A-Z list runs along the foot of every page. Save what you find to My List, press Reached this episode on the row you finished, and 9anime remembers both the next time you open it, on the same phone or on the television.
Start with a search
The search box says "Enter anime name" and it means any name. Sousou no Frieren opens Frieren: Beyond Journey's End; Kimetsu no Yaiba opens Demon Slayer; Shingeki no Kyojin, AOT and Attack on Titan all open the same page. The Japanese title in its own script works, the English release title works, and the shorthand fans use works: JJK, MHA, SxF, HxH, FMAB. Words like "watch", "online", "free", "sub", "dub", "episode" and "9anime" are stripped before the search runs, so a phrase pasted from a search engine finds the series rather than nothing.
Names are the other way in. Type a voice actor or a director and their series line up; type a studio, MAPPA, ufotable, Wit, Kyoto Animation, Studio Ghibli, and the same happens, which for a season you half remember is often the fastest route. Type a genre word, "romance", "mystery", "sports", and the search treats it as a genre; type "chinese" and it narrows to the donghua. The pill in the header is on every page, beside the ≡ button that opens the menu, one tap away.
When you are halfway through a series, add the episode. "jjk s2e5" or "one piece episode 1100": the results narrow to the series that has that episode with a recorded air date, one tap opens the show, and the season page is a tap further with the row you wanted in the table. Long series keep the continuous numbering the fans use, so One Piece episode 1100 is episode 1100 here and not episode 12 of season twenty-something. From there, Reached this episode marks your place and Watch now opens the show where it plays.
The search page adds the filters: type, genre, year, status, country, original language and minimum rating, with a sort by popularity, newest, rating, recent update or name. Status is the one anime fans use most, because ongoing and finished are different commitments. An empty result almost always has one of three causes, a cour counted differently, a title in another language, or a film searched as a series, and the search guide takes each in turn; the A-Z list shows the whole catalogue in one scroll.
The front page, shelf by shelf
The front page is laid out the way the 2021 site was, because that is the 9anime people mean. The purple spotlight band at the top carries one series with a line of its story and a big white Watch now button, the way the 2021 page did. Under it, Recently updated is the grid the old front page was famous for: the series with the newest dated episodes, five across, each poster tagged with its latest episode, with tabs for All, Ongoing, Movies, Chinese and Trending. A simulcast you follow appears there the day it airs in Japan, with the season and episode number and the date.
Trending now orders the catalogue by the attention it is getting this week, and it is where an older series climbs when a new cour is announced. Top airing is the returning series by the same measure, forty-four of them at the September update. New releases is everything by first release date, newest first, which is where a new film sits beside a new series. Then the two columns: Recently aired, the last two weeks day by day, and Top rated, the ranked list with the score on each row. Anime movies, the collections, the genres, the years and the A-Z strip close the page, and the article you are reading sits under them.
Seasons, cours, arcs and films
Anime is counted differently from Western television, and the site counts it the way the studios and the fans do. A twelve-episode cour is a season. A split-cour show, twelve episodes in spring and twelve in autumn, has two season pages. A long shonen has its arcs, and the season page for each lists its episodes in order with the title, the day it aired in Japan and the running time. Two hundred and one series are on the shelves at the September 2026 update, four hundred and seventy-seven seasons between them and 15,040 episodes with a recorded air date, which is every episode that has aired.
The badge on every card counts those dated episodes, Ep 1235 on Pokémon, Ep 1213 on Detective Conan, Ep 12 on a finished cour, so the commitment is never a surprise. Films sit on the movies shelf with their year, so a film that continues a series, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle after the Hashira Training arc, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc after the first season, lands in the right place in a watch order instead of being buried among episodes. The seasons and cours guide and the watch order page settle the awkward cases.
Reading a card, reading a page
Every card says the same four things: the poster, the title, the year with the rating, and the two badges, the Ep count bottom-left and TV or Movie top-right. That is enough to tell a finished cour from a hundred-episode run and a film from the series it continues before opening anything. Open the card and the title page begins with the poster, the Japanese title beneath the English one, and a row of chips: TV or Movie, the year, Ongoing or Completed, the number of dated episodes, and the first three genres. Then the story, then the two buttons: Watch now and Add to My List.
Under the story the facts panel lists the original title, the first air date, the language, the country, the number of seasons, the studio, the TMDB audience rating with its vote count, and the other names the series goes by, which is where the romaji, the Japanese title and the shorthand turn up; every one of those names is searchable. Below the facts, the voice cast and creators, each name a search away from their other work, and a You may also like row built from the genre rather than from what is popular, so the row under an isekai is other isekai and not this week's chart. Every series page ends with its season links, and every season page with its episode table.
Sub, dub, and the audio menu
"9anime dub" and "9anime subtitles not working" are searched every month, and both have the same answer: the tracks live on the service you open with Watch now. Every anime page states the original language, Japanese, or Mandarin for the donghua, and the service carries the subtitle track and, for most current series, the English dub. The subtitle track arrives with the simulcast; the English dub follows, immediately for an older series and a few weeks behind for a current cour, and where a later season shows subtitles only, the dub is a season behind and catches up. Press Watch now, open the service, and the audio menu lists the tracks; switch during playback and the subtitles follow.
The other dubs live on the services in their countries. "9anime hindi dubbed" is searched across India, and the Hindi track is on the Indian services for the large shonen; Spanish, Portuguese and German dubs are on the services in those countries. Set your country once and the Watch now list shows the service that has the anime there, and its menu carries the dub where the studio has made one. The original with subtitles is how the series was made and how the voice cast on the title page performed it; the dub is a different cast doing good work; both are legitimate, and the sub and dub page says which suits which kind of series.
The anime people search for by name
Put "9anime" next to a title in a search engine and the suggestions are a portrait of what the site's visitors actually watch, and every one of them is on the shelf. One Piece leads by a distance, wherever the name is known; Bleach, Vinland Saga, Chainsaw Man, Initial D, Blue Lock, Black Clover, Death Note, Dragon Ball Super, Soul Eater, Code Geass, Fairy Tail and Pokémon Horizons follow. Demon Slayer is searched with the name every week, and so are Detective Conan and Re:ZERO.
The current shelf is searched as hard as the classics: Solo Leveling, Frieren, Jujutsu Kaisen, Mushoku Tensei, Dan Da Dan, Kaiju No. 8, Sakamoto Days, Gachiakuta, The Apothecary Diaries and Spy x Family. Type any of them, or the shorthand, and the page opens with its cours; press Reached this episode on the row you finished and the place is kept. The one searched title that is not here is an adult production, and it stays out, along with everything of its kind.
The long shonen
The long shonen are the reason the season pages and the episode marks exist, because a series watched across a year on two devices is otherwise a series where you have seen the same episode twice. One Piece runs to 1,179 dated episodes across twenty-three arcs and is the longest table on the site. Naruto and Naruto Shippūden together pass seven hundred, Bleach four hundred, Gintama three hundred and sixty, Dragon Ball Z two hundred and ninety, Black Clover and My Hero Academia a hundred and seventy each, Hunter x Hunter, Fairy Tail and Fighting Spirit behind them. The long-running shelf gathers the twenty-three series with a hundred and fifty episodes or more, and the Ep badge is the first thing to read there.
The shounen shelf is the wider one, ninety titles, from the tournament arcs that made the tag famous to Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Tokyo Revengers, Fire Force, Dr. Stone and One-Punch Man. Start from the first episode or pick up the cour you skipped; the season links on every series page take you straight there, and the watch order page says where the films go.
This season and the last two weeks
Anime airs to a schedule, one episode a week for a cour of twelve or thirteen weeks, and two pages on the site follow it. Recently updated is the list of the newest dated episodes across every series, newest first, with the series name, the season and episode and the date. Recently aired is the same information laid out as a calendar looking backwards: the last fourteen days, one block per day, each episode linked to its row on the season page. The old site had a forward-looking schedule that guessed; this one records what has actually aired in Japan, and the services carry the simulcast within hours in most countries.
The ongoing shelf gathers every series still returning, forty-four at the September update, which is the shelf to open the week a new cour starts, and New in 2025 holds this year's arrivals, Sakamoto Days and Gachiakuta and the Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer films among them. Mark the episode you reached, open Recently aired the following week, and the new one is at the top of the newest day. The status line on a series page tells you which kind of commitment you are making: Returning means more is coming, Ended means the story is finished and the season pages are a checklist, Cancelled means it stopped early, which is worth knowing before the first episode.
Anime movies and Ghibli
Seventy films are on the movies shelf, and they are three kinds. The franchise films that continue a series, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc, are the two everyone searched this year, and each sits on its own page with the year so it lands in the right place in a watch order. The standalone films, Your Name, Akira, 5 Centimeters per Second, are the ones to recommend to someone who does not watch anime. And the Studio Ghibli shelf, twelve films, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, is family viewing for some and quiet drama for others.
The films are the one part of the anime catalogue that rewards a 4K screen; television anime is native 1080p, but these were finished for the cinema and the services carry them at the top tier. Choose your country once and the Watch now list shows where each film plays; the Ghibli films are on one global subscription in most countries and on another in Japan and the United States, and the franchise films arrive on the subscriptions a few months after the cinema.
Chinese donghua
The old site had a Chinese tab, and the donghua shelf is its successor: Link Click, Scissor Seven, Heaven Official's Blessing, The Daily Life of the Immortal King, The Founder of Diabolism, To Be Hero X and this year's Lord of Mysteries. Original audio is Mandarin; the English subtitles and, for the larger titles, the English dub are on the service you open. The Chinese tab on the Recently updated shelf narrows the newest episodes to these series, and the search treats "chinese" as a language filter.
The 90s and early 2000s
The classics shelf holds every series and film in the catalogue from before 2006, forty-nine of them, and it is the shelf people rewatch rather than discover: Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Berserk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Digimon Adventure, Slam Dunk, Initial D, Dragon Ball Z, Monster, and the films, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away. Shorter episode counts than you might expect for some of them: Evangelion is twenty-six episodes, Cowboy Bebop the same, and either is a fortnight.
These were mastered from film or from standard-definition video, and the HD release is the best they will look; a 4K stream of a 1998 series is an upscale. The free ad-supported services carry a surprising share of this shelf, whole runs included, so a rewatch usually costs nothing. The years page is the other way in: pick 1998 and read across.
Shounen, isekai, romance and the rest
The genre pages list every genre attached to the catalogue, and the collections are the curated version, built the way anime fans actually choose. Isekai and other worlds holds the reincarnation stories, Mushoku Tensei, Re:ZERO, Slime, Overlord, Sword Art Online; read the first line of the synopsis before committing, because some are comedies and some are not. Romance and rom-com, sixty-one titles, holds Horimiya, Kaguya-sama and the slow-burn school stories, short seasons that fit a weekend. Slice of life holds K-ON!, Bocchi the Rock! and the quieter shows about clubs and part-time jobs, good when you want something that needs no recap.
Sports holds Haikyu!!, Blue Lock, Slam Dunk and Fighting Spirit, real rules and invented rivals. Mystery and psychological holds Death Note, Monster, Erased, Summer Time Rendering and Steins;Gate; skip the episode summaries if you want to guess along. Dark fantasy runs from Berserk and Made in Abyss to Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer, with the age guidance on the service you open. Mecha and sci-fi holds Evangelion, Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Psycho-Pass and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, most of them finished, so there is no waiting. Comedy, ninety-one titles, is the shelf to dip in and out of, One-Punch Man, Spy x Family, Mob Psycho 100 and Gintama among them.
Watch orders
For a first time through any franchise, release order is the sensible choice, because it follows the way the series introduced its characters and its rules, and the year on every card gives it to you. The awkward cases are the films and the split cours, and the watch order page takes them one by one: where the Demon Slayer films go between the arcs, whether Jujutsu Kaisen 0 comes first, Naruto then Shippūden, Dragon Ball then Z then Super, Fate/Zero before Unlimited Blade Works, Bakemonogatari first whatever the chronology says. Where a franchise is not covered there, the search lists every entry with its year, which is the order for almost everything.
Reached this episode, and where you left off
Every row of every season table has a Reached this episode button. Press it when you finish an episode and 9anime remembers the row: the button reads "Saved here", the season page highlights it the next time you open it, and My List shows "Your saved place: Season 2, Episode 5" under the series. Press a later row and the place moves. Through a hundred-episode run on two devices, that is the difference between a series and a chore.
The mark is yours and stays in the browser you set it in. To carry it to another device, open My List, press Export, send yourself the small file it makes, and press Import on the other device: the marks and the titles merge, and the later mark wins. Mark the episode you finished, not the one you are about to start; the place is a bookmark, and a bookmark goes at the end of the page you read.
My List
The button on every title page reads Add to My List, and the list opens from the heart button beside the search pill. It is where the cour for the weekend goes, the shonen you mean to start, and the series you are waiting to finish airing so you can watch it in one go. Each card on the list shows the poster, the year, and for a series your saved place, and a Remove button. There is no account behind it; the list is stored in your browser and sent nowhere. The list page carries Export and Import: Export writes a few kilobytes holding the titles and the episode marks, Import reads such a file and merges it, which is how the list moves from phone to tablet to the television's browser and the backup to take before clearing a browser's data. The viewing country is stored beside it.
Watch now: choosing the country and the service
Watch now is the button under every anime. Press it and the anime opens on the services carrying it in the country you chose: the anime specialists, the global subscriptions, the free ad-supported services marked as free, and the stores that sell a season, each with the price where there is one. Choose the service, and the anime plays there in HD, subbed or dubbed from its audio menu, on every device that service supports, with its own download button for the train. 9anime stays where you were, on the title page, ready for the next one.
Twelve countries are covered: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, the Philippines, Germany, France, Brazil, Indonesia, New Zealand and Singapore. The country matters more than anything else on the page: an anime on three services in the United States can be on one in the United Kingdom and, for a week after the simulcast, none in a third; the Ghibli films sit on different services in different countries; the Hindi dub is on the Indian services alone. Choose the country you are in, change it deliberately when you travel, and change it back. A series on no service where you are yet shows its options the week one picks it up, so a series saved to My List is worth checking back on. Every service on the list is a licensed one operating in the country you selected, which is what makes viewing legal wherever you are; it is also how the site pays its way, through a referral fee some services pay at their ordinary price. The safe and legal page has both answers in full.
Free, and what free means
"9anime free" is searched in every country, and everything on the site is free: search, the shelves, every title and season page, My List and the app, with no account and nothing between you and any page. When you press Watch now, the list for your country includes the free ad-supported services, marked as free, alongside the subscriptions, and free carries more anime than people expect: whole runs of the long shonen, the older seasons of current series, and most of the classics shelf. The current simulcasts and the franchise films sit on the subscriptions first and drift to the free tiers over time. Choose your country on any title page and the Watch now list on every anime tells you at a glance which is which.
HD, 1080p, 4K and a cour's worth of data
Anime is a special case among everything the services carry. Most television anime is produced at 1080p or below and upscaled, so the HD stream is the real one and a 4K stream adds little; the theatrical films are the exception and look superb in 4K on a 4K screen. 720p and 1080p are both HD, 1080p the full frame, and the difference shows on a television and disappears on a phone. The service decides the tier from the master, your plan and the screen, and the year on the card is the quickest guide: a 90s series was mastered from film or standard-definition video, and its HD release is as good as it will look.
HD needs about five megabits a second and uses one to three gigabytes an hour; a twelve-episode cour in HD is about six gigabytes, and about two at the service's data-saver tier, which is the setting to choose on mobile data. Download over Wi-Fi at night and the train costs nothing. If a stream buffers, drop the tier one step in the player and it settles. The quality page has the numbers in one place.
Phone, television, app
The site is the same on every screen, laid out for a phone first: two posters across with the Ep tag on each, the search pill at the top, the menu behind the ≡ button, the Quick filter and Top anime panels below the grid, the season tables full width, and the country menu and Watch now under the title's details. The 9anime app is the site installed to the home screen: in Chrome on Android choose Add to Home screen, in Safari on iPhone tap share and choose Add to Home Screen, and it installs in two taps with the purple icon, opens full-screen with your list, your country and your episode marks inside it, and updates itself every time you open it. "9anime apk" and "9anime application" come up constantly in India and the Philippines, and the install from the browser is the answer to both: quicker and safer than any APK file, with nothing to find on a forum and nothing to sideload.
On a television, any browser opens the site, Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV's Silk and most smart TVs; bookmark the address, search with the remote or the voice button, and Watch now opens the anime in the service's TV app when it is installed. The quicker route is casting: open the anime on your phone, press Watch now, choose the service, and cast from the service's app; the phone becomes the remote and My List stays open in your hand, which for a long shonen run is the better arrangement anyway. Chromecast, Apple TV and AirPlay work the same way, and both consoles run the services as apps. The devices guide walks through each one.
Downloads
"9anime download", "9anime downloader" and "how to download anime from 9anime" are searched every month, and the download lives inside the service you open with Watch now. Whole cours come down to a phone or tablet in HD, with the sub or dub you chose, and stay for weeks; a twelve-episode cour is about six gigabytes in HD and about two at the data-saver tier, so download over Wi-Fi the night before. A program or Chrome extension calling itself a 9anime downloader is somebody else's software; the service's download does the job on the phone you already have. The downloads page covers space, tracks and keeping My List offline.
9anime to, org, me, and the address to keep
Type "9anime" into a search engine and the suggestions come with a tail: 9anime to, 9anime org, 9anime me, 9anime se, 9anime gate, 9anime gg. Each is an address the name lived on, or a copy that borrowed it, and each is still searched by the people who used it. 9anime.to is the one the design here was measured from, as it looked in June 2021: the near-black page, the purple spotlight banner, the pill search reading Enter anime name, Recently updated with its tabs, the Top anime list and the A-Z strip. That is the 9anime people remember, and this site is built on it, with everything under it rebuilt: every series by the cour with every episode dated, the Recently aired list, My List with episode marks, and a Watch now button that lists services by country.
"9anime new site", "9anime new name" and "9anime unblocked" are searched whenever an address goes dark or a network filters one, and the answer is this address, which does not move; save it to the home screen and the question never comes up again, and if a school or office network filters entertainment sites, your phone's data or a VPN you already trust gets you there. The address page lists every suffix with what it was, explains mirrors and proxies, and describes how to recognise the real site: the 9 in the purple roundel, a search that understands romaji and shorthand, title pages with the voice cast and the cours, and no registration, no download button pointing at a file, no page asking for a card, no player asking for a plug-in.
What happened to 9anime
"What happened to 9anime", "did 9anime get shut down", "9anime wikipedia": the history is searched every month, and it is short. 9anime launched in 2016 and became one of the largest anime addresses on the internet, moving between suffixes as addresses do. In 2023 it renamed itself AniWave, and on 27 August 2024 that site closed after action involving Vietnamese authorities and the anti-piracy coalition ACE. The name people still type is on this address, rebuilt on the 2021 design with everything under it new, and pointing, through Watch now, at the licensed services carrying each anime in your country, subbed and dubbed. The what happened page tells the story in full, and the alternatives page answers the other question people ask after a closure.
When 9anime will not load
"Is 9anime down" is one of the most searched phrases next to the name, and five causes cover nearly every case. The address will not load: switch the phone between Wi-Fi and mobile data, because a filtering network is the usual cause, and wait a few minutes if it loads on neither; most "9anime down today" searches come from the old AniWave closure or from copies on other suffixes. The near-black background is missing: the stylesheet did not arrive; reload once, then clear the site's data if it persists. Search stuck at "Loading results": scripts are blocked; allow them for this site. Watch now shows nothing for your country: change the country menu, or check back after the simulcast week. "9anime bad gateway" and "9anime servers": those belong to the old site's video hosts; here the video plays on the service you open, so a bad-gateway message belongs to that service's player, and reloading it or picking another service from the list fixes it. The not working page goes through every case, including the login problem people search for, which has no answer here because there is nothing to log into.
Alternatives, GoGoAnime and Reddit
"9anime alternatives" is the second most searched phrase next to the name wherever the name is known, and "gogoanime and 9anime" is the comparison people make, because the two sites organised anime the same way and people used both. The honest answer is that you are on the site the copies were copying, with the search that reads every name, the seasons by the cour, every episode dated, the Recently aired list, My List, and Watch now for your country. Four things decide whether an anime site is worth keeping: how deep the catalogue goes and whether it takes the long shonen and the classics seriously, whether sub and dub are both reachable, whether the cours are counted the way the fans count them, and whether it works on a phone, and the alternatives page takes each in turn. The Reddit threads asking which address works are worth reading for the mood, and the answer is the same every time: this address, and for an anime you will rewatch, the specialist services on the Watch now list.
Ratings, votes and Top rated
The score on every card and page is the TMDB audience rating, shown with its vote count, and the vote count is the part to read. A score of 8.7 from thirty thousand votes is a settled verdict; a score of 8.7 from sixty votes is a first week's enthusiasm, and it will drift. That is why Top rated requires at least five hundred votes behind a title before it can appear. The scores are TMDB's, not MyAnimeList's and not IMDb's, and they run high for anime because the people who vote on anime are the people who finished it, which is worth remembering when a cour outranks a prestige drama on another site. The minimum-rating filter on the search page uses a floor of fifty votes; combine it with status and a year and the result is a short list worth reading in full, and sorting by popularity instead of rating gives a different list that is often the more useful one for a Friday.
Planning a cour, a weekend, a year
The Ep badge and the running time on the season table turn a shelf into a plan. A single cour is twelve or thirteen episodes of twenty-four minutes, about five hours, which is a weekend with room to spare: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is ten episodes, Erased twelve, Bocchi the Rock! twelve. Two cours are a fortnight of evenings, and Death Note, Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are all in that range. A finished series of sixty to a hundred episodes, Brotherhood, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, is a month of an episode a night. The long shonen are a year or more, and they are the shelf where Reached this episode earns its place on every row.
The status chip is the other half of the plan. Completed means the season pages are a checklist and nothing will be added; Ongoing means a new dated episode arrives on Recently updated most weeks, and the week a cour ends, the shelf tells you by going quiet. People who would rather watch a cour in one sitting than wait a week save the series to My List at its announcement and open it when the badge reads Ep 12; people who like the week's conversation open Recently aired on the day. Either works, and the site holds the place for both.
Voice actors, directors and studios
Every anime page lists its voice cast and its creators, and every name is a link that runs a search. The Japanese cast is the one listed, because it is the cast that made the series, and the same names recur across the catalogue: a search for a lead in Jujutsu Kaisen returns the other series they carry, and following the thread from one to the next is how most people find the series they did not know they wanted. Directors work the same way, from a Ghibli film to the rest of the Ghibli shelf, or from Your Name to 5 Centimeters per Second. The studio line is the one anime fans read first, and it is searchable: type ufotable and the Demon Slayer entries line up with the Fate films; type MAPPA and Jujutsu Kaisen sits beside Chainsaw Man, Vinland Saga's second season and the final seasons of Attack on Titan; type Kyoto Animation and K-ON! and Violet Evergarden appear together; type Wit, Bones, Madhouse or Trigger and the same happens. The results page for a name shows the poster cards with their Ep badges, so a studio's filmography is a shelf of its own.
Genres, years and the A-Z list
Three browse pages sit at the bottom of the front page and in the footer, and each answers a different mood. The genre pages list every genre attached to the catalogue with the count on each, and a genre page is the whole catalogue filtered to it, sorted by popularity with the Ep badge on every card; the anime genres are the TMDB set, so Animation appears on everything and the useful ones are Action & Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi & Fantasy and the rest, with the collections supplying isekai, shounen, slice of life and the other words the genre system does not carry. The years page is a row of years from 1988 to this one; pick 2006 and Death Note, Code Geass and Ouran High School Host Club sit together, which is how a season of anime is remembered by the people who watched it live. The A-Z list is the whole catalogue as one alphabet, every series and film under its English title with the Japanese title searchable behind it, and it is the fastest way to answer whether a title is on the site at all. Each of these pages is a page of its own with a stable address, so a genre or a year is a bookmark, and each opens on a phone with the same two-across posters as the front page.
The country page
The country menu under every poster sets where Watch now looks, and the country page is the same choice made once for the whole site, with a line for each of the twelve countries explaining what the anime services look like there: the anime specialists that carry the simulcasts within an hour of Japan, the global subscriptions that hold the Ghibli films and the franchise movies, the free ad-supported tiers that carry the older seasons and most of the classics shelf, and, in India and the Philippines, the local services that carry the Hindi and Filipino tracks. Set it once and every Watch now list on the site follows; travel, and change it for the trip. A series with no service in your country shows its options the week one licenses it, so a title saved to My List is worth a second look a month later.
Questions
What is 9anime?
9anime is an anime site built around one search box that understands the way fans type: romaji, English, Japanese, or the shorthand like JJK and AOT. Every series has a page per cour with every episode dated the day it aired in Japan, a Reached this episode button on every row, My List, and a Watch now button that opens the anime on the services carrying it in your country, subbed or dubbed.
Is 9anime down?
The site itself is rarely the part that fails. If it will not load, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, because a filtering network is the usual cause; if pages look unstyled, reload once; if search stops at Loading results, allow scripts; if Watch now lists nothing, change the country menu. Most "is 9anime down" searches come from the old AniWave closure or from copies on other suffixes; this address is the one to keep.
What happened to 9anime?
9anime launched in 2016, renamed itself AniWave in 2023, and that site closed in August 2024. The name people still type is on this address, rebuilt on the 2021 design with every series by the cour, every episode dated, My List, and Watch now listing the licensed services for your country.
Does 9anime have an app or APK?
Yes. In Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, choose Add to Home Screen; the site installs in two taps with the purple icon and runs full-screen with your list and your country inside it. The install comes straight from the browser and keeps itself current, so there is nothing to find on APKPure and nothing to sideload.
Is 9anime safe?
Yes. 9anime asks for no account, installs nothing and offers no file to download; the three things it keeps, your list, your viewing country and the episodes you mark, stay in your own browser. The anime itself plays on the licensed service you pick from the Watch now list for your country, which is what keeps every viewing legal.
Subbed or dubbed?
Both, on the service you open with Watch now: the subtitle track arrives with the simulcast and the English dub follows, immediately for older series and a few weeks behind for a current cour. Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese and German dubs live on the services in those countries. Switch in the player's audio menu and the subtitles follow.
Which 9anime address is the real one?
This one. The name has lived on 9anime to, org, me, se, gate and gg and spent a year as AniWave; each was a copy or a snapshot of the idea. Save this address to your home screen and the question never comes up again.
Can I download anime from 9anime?
Yes, inside the service you open with Watch now: whole cours come down to a phone or tablet in HD, with the sub or dub you chose, and stay for weeks. Press Watch now, open the service, use its download button. A twelve-episode cour is about six gigabytes in HD.
How are seasons counted?
By the cour, the way the studios and the fans count them: a twelve-episode cour is a season, a split-cour show has two, a long shonen has its arcs. Long series keep the continuous episode numbering fans use, so One Piece episode 1100 is episode 1100 here. The Ep badge on every card counts the dated episodes.
What are Recently updated and Recently aired?
Recently updated lists the newest dated episodes across every series, newest first, the way the old front page did. Recently aired shows the last two weeks day by day, looking back at what has actually aired in Japan rather than guessing a schedule. A simulcast you follow appears on both the day it airs.
Is 9anime free?
Everything on the site is free: search, the shelves, every title and season page, My List and the app, with no account. Watch now lists the free ad-supported services carrying an anime in your country beside the subscriptions, and free carries more anime than people expect, whole shonen runs included.
What is in the catalogue?
Two hundred and seventy-one anime at the September 2026 update: two hundred and one series and seventy films, with every season by the cour and every episode dated, from One Piece, Bleach and Naruto to this season's simulcasts, the Ghibli films and the Chinese donghua.
